Two fan favorites, many players can’t choose between Cass or Boone. Is Cass or Boone a better companion?
Boone is a better companion than Cass. He’s easier to get, has better attack range, and a more powerful weapon.
He’s a bit more stoic than Cass, so some players might prefer the cowgirl’s personality instead.
Cass or Boone | Acquiring the companion
Acquiring either Cass or Boone is very different. In order to get Cass as a follower, you need to make contact with the Crimson Caravan Company outside of New Vegas.
The head of the company will ask you to help buy out Cass’ family caravan business. After doing so, she’ll join you as a follower.
This is a surprising amount of work for new players. Not only will you need to enter the Mojave Outpost, but you must also make your way North. Many players won’t be able to reach the Crimson Caravan Company until the mid-game, so you’ll likely have other followers before Cass.
Boone, on the other hand, is much easier. The main quest will take players through Novac, where Boone stands inside the dinosaur monument’s mouth at night time.
The side quest to acquire Boone is very straightforward. It’s entirely self-contained within Novac itself, so you don’t have to do much running around.
Combat effectiveness
In terms of combat effectiveness, the two are also different.
Boone is a long range sniper who’s not afraid to get aggressive. As you walk the Mojave, he’ll be picking apart Legionnaires, raiders, creatures, and anything else you may run into. Boone will attack and defeat enemies that you weren’t aware were nearby.
Cass is also a great fighter, but only at close range. She’s a shotgun-based fighter who packs a huge wallop. Even so, players may be frustrated having to fight such close quarters.
If you’re a melee or shotgun-based player, then Cass at your side could prove immensely useful. If you prefer picking enemies off from a distance, then Boone is surely the better choice.
