The first time Denji enters Makima’s apartment, he’s surrounded by dozens of different dogs. But why does Makima like dogs?

Makima likes dogs because they are completely obedient. The devil she’s contracted with, the Control Devil, exemplifies her need to never be defied and always be controlling in every dynamic. Surrounding herself with something as obedient as dogs allows her to always be the top decision maker.

Denji, who looks to have as simple a life as possible, enjoys being told what to do by Makima.

Chapter Specifics Behind Why Makima Likes Dogs

In chapter #81, Denji sits with Makima in her two story apartment. She found him lying on a public bench, reminiscing over his conflict with Aki. Makima invites Denji back to her place so the two can talk and reflect.

The apartment is filled with nearly a dozen different dogs. It seems like Makima only begins to show emotion when she’s around her animals, loving them up and petting them one by one. Denji notices the love and appreciation she gives the dogs, in turn requesting that Makima treat him like one.

Denji says he doesn’t want to have to think for himself anymore. In his old life, Denji only had to worry about staying alive. Now that he’s hooked up with all these new friends and a devil-hunting line of work, he has thousands of responsibilities swirling around his head.

Acting and behaving like a dog under Makima’s guidance would remove Denji’s need to think. Makima gives Denji one last chance to back out of his request, but he assures her with a peace sign that he wants to commit

This line exemplifies why Makima likes dogs. They’re completely obedient to a fault and will go along with their master’s requests without objections. Makima, possessing the Control Devil, yearns for complete and utter compliance of those around her.

She works to use her Control Devil in order to rewrite history books and manipulate the world around her. Control is, to put it lightly, her entire purpose in life. She even tried to control Denji by stealing his heart. Dogs will remain completely obedient to their owners unless large and unfortunate circumstances occur. Surrounding herself with dozens of dogs allows Makima to live her fantasy of total control, as surrounding herself with people brings up complications of free will.

So that’s the answer. Makima likes dogs because they’re easy to control and are always obedient to a fault. Obedience and control is something she seeks in every facet of her life due to her contract with the Control Devil.
