Why Did Nezuko Sleep For 2 Years?

Tanjiro’s younger sister Nezuko slept for years while he completed his training for the Demon Slayer Corps. But why did Nezuko sleep for 2 years?

Nezuko had to sleep for 2 years because that’s how she replenishes her strength. The traumatic event of becoming a demon led her to recharge for years while Tanjiro was off training for the Final Selection.

Her sleep cycle would become more normal as the plot goes on. Now, Nezuko only falls unconscious to build back up strength after a tough battle or two.

Nezuko slept while Tanjiro prepared for the Final Selection Exam. The training involved daily exercises from dawn to dusk, and he prepared a journal for Nezuko to read once she awakened from her never-ending sleep.

I’ve been writing for six months, Nezuko, and you still haven’t woken up. Urokodaki immediately called a doctor to look at you, but he found nothing wrong. Yet it’s clearly strange for you to continue sleeping like this. I was scared. I thought I’d wake up in the morning to find you dead, and that’s still how I feel every night.

Tanjiro to Nezuko | Chapter #4

Nezuko continued to sleep for those 2 years until Tanjiro successfully finished his training and returned from the Final Selection alive. Not long after, the duo got the call for their first official mission.

While Urokodaki introduces the new carrying box that he designed for Nezuko, he mentions his theory on why she may sleep so frequently and for such a long period of time.

This is mere speculation, but instead of eating the flesh of humans, Nezuko may sleep to replenish her strength.

Urokodaki to Tanjiro | Chapter #10

Urokodaki’s theory turned out to be true. After most fights, Nezuko ends up falling asleep and has to remain unconscious before she can rejoin the battle. Once things settled down after Tanjiro lost his family and the training began, it would make sense that Nezuko would use this time of stability to recharge after the traumatic experience of becoming a demon.

So there’s the answer. Nezuko needed to sleep for 2 years to replenish her strength after becoming a demon. She then continued to sleep intermittently whenever she needed more strength.
