Why Did Genya Pull Out His Teeth?

In chapter #101, Tanjiro arrives at the Swordsmith Village. He has a brief encounter with Genya, a Demon Slayer he originally meets during the Final Selection exam.

Tanjiro sees Genya pull out his teeth, but doesn’t receive a satisfying answer as to why. He then joins Mitsuri, the Love Hashira, for dinner.

Mitsuri also meets Genya at the hot spring and is insulted by his rudeness. Tanjiro informs her that he met Genya at the Final Selection. While at the test, Tanjiro decides to attack Genya when the boy threatens an exam proctor. Tanjiro is later confronted about this attack when he witnesses Genya pull out his teeth.

Learning Genya’s last name, Mitsuri realizes he must be related to Sanemi, the Wind Hashira. Sanemi claims he doesn’t have a little brother, so they must be on bad terms, Mitsuri sadly suggests.

Mitsuri talks more about joining the Corps

Tanjiro asks Mitsuri why she joined the Demon Slayer Corps. She’s embarrassed, holding back her answer. After breaking, Mitsuri admits she became a Demon Slayer in order to find a man to marry.

“It’s good for a girl to find someone stronger than herself,” Mitsuri explains. “Someone to protect her! You see? Many boys don’t understand.”

Tanjiro is absolutely shocked and begins sweating. He realizes that by joining the Demon Slayers, he’s technically eligible to be a potential husband for Mitsuri. While still in shock, Tanjiro thinks to himself that the Hashira are strong, so he’d have to become one in order to be noticed by her.

Mitsuri tells Tanjiro it’s alright to be shocked since everyone she tells feels the same way.

So that’s the answer. Mitsuri decides to become a demon slayer because she wants to find a man to marry. She says that girls want a boy who’s stronger than them, and the Demon Slayer Corps is an excellent place to look.
