Why Did Denji Make Kobeni Dance?

One of the best known character moments for Kobeni is her using the Dance Dance Mushroom machine. The scene appears very late into the Chainsaw Man story. But why did Denji make Kobeni dance? Up to this point, we don’t even know what devil Kobeni is contracted with.

Denji chooses to make Kobeni dance so she’s safe while he confronts Makima. He leaves Kobeni behind on the street level and waits patiently upon a rooftop. It’s also possible that having Kobeni dance is part of the simulated date they were on.

Prior to Kobeni dancing, Denji remarks that he wishes he was on a date with a girl. He brings Kobeni to multiple date-like places, which could be another reason he makes her dance.

Denji chooses to make Kobeni dance

In chapter #86, Denji assumes his final Chainsaw Man form and heads for Family Burger. Kobeni, who works at the restaurant with her unsupportive and toxic family, accidentally drops Denji’s food on the ground.

What Devil is Kobeni Contracted With?

After getting rid of Kobeni’s Dad, Denji thinks to himself that he really wants to go on a date with a girl. While still in his final form, Denji picks Kobeni up and carries her to an ice cream stand.

While they eat, a devil hunter approaches. The hunter tries to comfort Kobeni, but Denji takes out the man almost immediately. It’s clear that Makima’s hit squad is encircling in their pursuit to capture the Chainsaw Devil heart within Denji.

Denji realizes Makima is in the area. He drops Kobeni in front of a Dance Dance Mushroom machine and instructs her to dance.

Kobeni says the machine needs money or else she can’t dance. Denji slices an ATM in half, thousands of coins and paper money spilling out from its base. She says she’s never played before, but Kobeni performs at the dance machine greatly.

But why did Denji make Kobeni dance? Considering he left her at the machine while he goes off to confront Makima, it seems he wants her in a safe place. The machine keeps Kobeni on the ground level while Denji fights on the rooftop.

Another idea is that it’s part of the date they were simulating. Denji had Kobeni eat ice cream with him after he proclaims he wishes he was on a date with a girl. It’s possible that playing Dance Dance Mushroom is part of that date.

Either way, Denji leaves Kobeni behind to confront Makima and her hitsquad. Therefore, both could be right.

So that’s the probable answer. Denji chooses to make Kobeni dance because he wants her in a safe place before he confronts Makima. Playing on the Dance Dance Machine could also be a part of their simulated date.
