Why Did Nezuko’s Hair Change Color?

The first time we see Nezuko in human form she has completely dark hair. Later in the series, colorful streaks appear, but why did Nezuko’s hair change color?

Nezuko’s hair seemed to change color because she became a demon. Most demons have colorful streaks in their hair, and Nezuko seemingly received hers right after becoming one. The moment she transforms and breaks off from Tanjiro, we can see the difference in her hair.

We see further evidence of this theory as Nezuko and Tanjiro meet more demons, some friendlier than others.

How Did Nezuko Become a Demon?

Normally we use the manga as a source, but we’ll be using the anime today in order to account for the color change. Within episode #1, it’s clear that Nezuko’s hair is completely black. Both the top, bottom, and tips of her hair are completely dark.

After Nezuko awakens from her sleep and makes Tanjiro fall off the mountain, she goes missing for a moment. Once the camera focuses back on her, you can see a distinctive streak of color in her hair. This streak was not seen before, so it can only be summarized that it comes from the result of being a demon.

Even after Nezuko calmed down with help from Giyu, the streak remained in her hair. As the duo meets other demons, most notably the Upper Moons, it becomes clear that colorful streaks in the hair are the mark of a demon.

Yushiro, the assistant of Tamayo, was also turned into a demon later in life. He has a light green shade affixed to his dark black hair. Susamaru, the Temari Demon that attacked Yushiro, has streaks of light orange on the tips of her hair.

So there’s the answer. Nezuko’s hair seemed to change color because she became a demon. Her hair was completely dark before, and then colorful streaks appeared immediately after her transformation.
