Soon to be adapted for the screen, Chainsaw Man features a protagonist (Denji) with saws for weapons. But how did Denji become Chainsaw Man?
Denji became the Chainsaw Man after forming a contract with Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil. The devil offered his heart to Denji in exchange for experiencing more of the boy’s dreams.
The devil offered one of the few contracts that does not come with a negative flaw. Usually, the human must agree to a substantial sacrifice to complete a devil’s contract.
The boy’s father owed an incredibly large, seemingly never ending debt to the Yakuza. Once he passed away, the Yakuza debt was passed on to Denji despite him being young and unsupervised.
Denji met Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, while grieving over his father’s grave. Wounded and near death, the devil limped over. Denji offers his own blood to help heal the Chainsaw Devil, under the contract condition that Denji could use the devil’s chainsaw appendage to become a hunter.

Plot Reasons Behind Why Denji Became The Chainsaw Man
The duo fought devils and collected large bounties to pay off the Yakuza debt for years. The Yakuza took ridiculously large amounts of pay cuts from Denji’s bounties, leaving only enough money in the pay out for something as small as a slice of bread each day to feast on.
Pochita, I’ll probably get myself killed fighting devils before long. If that happens, I’m worried about what’ll happen to you. You might starve to death, or maybe get taken out by another Devil Hunter. I heard there are devils who can take over dead people’s bodies. If you can do that, then I’ll give ya my body.

Soon after, Yakuza members lured Denji into an alleyway. It’s revealed the local Yakuza made a contract with the Zombie Devil, sacrificing their own free will in order to gain power. The Zombie Devil despised Denji for becoming a devil hunter, and it ordered the zombies to chop the boy and Pochita up. The two were then dropped in a dumpster.

Pochita to Denji | Chapter #1
Pochita created a contract that would bring Denji back to life by taking the place of his heart. He also gained the full abilities of the Chainsaw Devil, using the saws as weapons on both his arms and head.
So that’s how Denji became the Chainsaw Man. Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, made a contract that allowed Denji to use the devil as his heart in exchange for staying his friend and fulfilling his dreams.
