In an unexpected twist, Tanjiro becomes a demon during the final chapters of the Demon Slayer manga. Does Tanjiro recover from being a demon?
Yes, Tanjiro does recover from being a demon. He survives the encounter, but his left arm is wrinkled up like an old man and he can’t feel anything below the elbow. Tanjiro’s right eye also has severe vision issues and he can’t see much out of it.
Tanjiro suffers these injuries because he became a demon during the final battle against Muzan. While transitioning back to a human, the injuries to his body remained.
Tanjiro explains his recovery after becoming a demon
In chapter #204, 3 months have passed since the final battle against Muzan. Tanjiro lays in a hospital bed while Nezuko, in her human form, admires the blooming Sakura trees just outside the window. Demon Slayer does indeed have a good ending.
Nezuko lifts up Tanjiro’s left arm to see it. It’s impossible for Tanjiro to grip anything, and the skin wrinkles like an old man. He can raise and lower the arm, but not feel anything below the elbow.
Tanjiro admits that his arm was completely destroyed during the transition away from being a demon. His right eye also has serious vision issues, and he can’t see anything out of it.
Kanao, a peer of Tanjiro and future love interest, suffered long-lasting injuries from the battle as well. She uses an advanced, forbidden technique that allows her an opportunity to win at the cost of her own eyesight.
She tells Tanjiro that there’s still some form of sight left in her eyes. The two meet each other at the old “Victory” tree, said to be planted by the original Flower Breathing user.
Besides Tanjiro and Kanao, the other young characters do not face serious damage to their bodies. Nezuko makes a full recovery after she transitions back to a human. Inosuke and Zenitsu did not receive any particularly devastating blows during their respective final battles.
So that’s the answer. Tanjiro does recover from being a demon, but his arm wrinkles up like an old man. He can’t feel it below the elbow, and he also lost full sight in his right eye.
